Annuals, 30-70 (-150+) cm. Stem usually erect, branched. Leaves opposite; usually sessile or shortly petiolate; usually 1-3-pinnate, rarely simple; simple blades or terminal lobes linear- lanceolate to linear, 10-60 mm x 2.5-5 mm. Peduncles 1-18 cm long. Synflorescence of solitary capitula or capitula in lax corymbs, capitula ca. 3.5 cm across, radiate. Calycular bracts 8, in 2 series, outer small (ca. 3 mm x 2 mm) and inner large (ca. 4 mm x 2.5 mm), deltate-lanceolate, apex recurved. Involucre +/- globose, ca. 1-3 cm diameter; phyllaries 8-9, in 2 series, lance-oblong to lance-ovate, up to 10 mm x 4.5 mm, reflexed, distal part with brown parallel lines. Receptacle flat to convex, paleate; paleae deciduous, nearly equal to disc florets, linear-lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, scarious with prominent orange-red longitudinal lines, apex acute or acuminate. Ray florets: 8, usually in 1 series, female. Corolla tube very short; limb 12- 25 mm x 8-15 mm, obovate to broadly obovate, apex usually 3-lobed, lobes unequal, usually yellow with red brown blotch, sometimes red brown in proximal 1/3- 9/10 and distally yellow, rarely red brown or yellow throughout. Disc florets: Many, ca. 10 mm long. Corolla 6-7 mm long; tube ca. 4 mm long, slender, yellow; throat funnelform, reddish brown, 5-lobed, lobes 0.5 mm long, deltate, recurved. Anthers ca. 2.5 mm long, exserted. Style 6-7 mm long; stigma bifid, orange-yellow, prominently recurved. Cypselae 1.5-4 mm long, black, obcompressed, ovate-oblong, wingless, slightly arcuate, faces tuberculate. Pappus persistent, of 2 bristly scales, 0.1-1+ mm long.
